Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Qualified Charitable Distribution?
A Qualified Charitable Distribution, or QCD, is a gift made directly from your IRA to an eligible nonprofit like Hearts of Patriots. A QCD can be a tax-smart way to support military caregivers and Veteran families while potentially reducing your taxable income.
Who is eligible to make a QCD?
Individuals age 70½ or older can make a Qualified Charitable Distribution from an eligible IRA. The gift must be sent directly from your IRA administrator to Hearts of Patriots to qualify. We recommend speaking with your financial or tax advisor to determine whether a QCD is right for you.
Can a QCD count toward my required minimum distribution?
Yes. If you are required to take a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD), a Qualified Charitable Distribution can generally count toward all or part of that requirement, as long as the gift meets IRS requirements. Keep in mind that the age for making a QCD and the age when RMDs begin are not necessarily the same.
How will Hearts of Patriots know the gift came from me?
IRA administrators do not always include the donor’s name or contact information with a distribution. After requesting your gift, please let Hearts of Patriots know it is on the way so we can properly acknowledge your generosity and thank you for supporting military caregivers and Veteran families.
